2008 THIRD HONORABLE MENTION
WHAT ABOUT PEACE?
Cheylin Thomas
17 years old, New York
We arm ourselves with cannons and guns,
What about peace?
Casualties tolling up until the war is done,
What about peace?
Stained-red men fall like broken plaster,
What about peace?
A violent Earth we live in; a visible disaster,
What about peace?
Sticks and stones to break our bones,
What about peace?
Hurtful words through the wires of our telephones,
What about peace?
We think we're at war, but really we're at hell,
What about peace?
Screams of terror ringing loudly though our ears like a bell,
What about peace?
Lost lives of America's bravest daughters and sons,
What about peace?
Risking their lives until the war is won,
What about peace?
So will we fight until life on this planet is through?
When the world starts to crumble, will that be our cue?
An eye for an eye leaves a blind America,
So now it's my turn to ask you... WHAT ABOUT PEACE?
